The Latitude 64 Collection: Alaska Landscapes

While on a “camping” (we were in a cabin) trip last summer, we happened upon a birch tree that had recently fallen. The bark was still nice and soft and I just couldn’t help but whip out the trusty mini saw (that is always in my pocket when I’m hiking) and start stripping off some bark! One of the pieces hanging off the tree was such a perfect shape and size that I knew it would make an amazing canvas. I began stripping the piece down and it peeled apart into 4 absolutely perfect layers - I knew it would have to be its own collection.

This is the Latitude 64 Collection because we found the tree at 64*19.1, -146*38.7. It is composed of a series of landscapes from around Alaska. Each of these places have a special place in my heart.

*All of these are available as signed and numbered limited edition prints in my shop.

BEYOND MISTY MTNS.jpg

Beyond the Misty Mountains

I was inspired by the foggy morning views in interior Alaska - near my home in Fairbanks. As the fall starts to impose and the sun begins to fade, these chilly mornings are a beautiful harbinger of the coming winter. This piece feels like home - like hygge - like a cup of warm tea, a good book, and a fire crackling beside me.

THE SOUNDS OF SUMMER.jpg

The Sounds of Summer

This particular scene is from southern Alaska near Seward. The vibrant greens of summer are such a vivid contrast to the landscape of winter. I live for these days. I can almost hear the sound of my paddle in the water propelling me through this beautiful and unique landscape. Perhaps there’s even a bear in the distance nibbling grasses and berries.

The Great One

Alaska’s iconic mountain - Denali (previously Mt. McKinley) towers over the landscape in a way you can’t imagine until you see it. In this fall scene, you can almost feel the biting wind blasting over the lake trying to drive you away. But how could one leave a scene so incredible?

Golden Hour

That perfect time of day - the golden hour. It’s the only thing that can make the already incredible views along the Denali Park highway even better. The colors are so bold on their own, yet when you add that golden light of evening (which comes a bit later than we’re used to elsewhere in the country) the landscape comes alive in new and special ways. I love the way the icy blues of the glaciers run down into twisted, silty brown rivers everywhere you look.
