Tuullek - aka Common loon (Gavia immer) - are one of the most prevalent loon species in North America. Their range spans teh majority of the contiguous US, Canada, and Alaska where they can be found coastally or on interior lakes.
While they are accomplished swimmers and rather elegant on the water, they are hilariously clumsy on land. Their legs are placed far back on their bodies allowing for powerful swimming, however this makes walking a challenge. In fact, their name “loon” likely comes from the Old English (lumme) or Scandinavian (lum) which means clumsy or awkward. Tuullek, however, is the Yup’ik name for the common loon. When pronounced correctly, it sounds much like one of the loon’s many call sounds!
All birch bark for these pieces is harvested sustainably from downed trees in interior Alaska.
