These incredible creatures inhabit mountainous regions of western North America. In Alaska, they're found predominately in the south-central and southeast. As expected, they are grazers and browsers feeding primarily on sedges, forbs, and low-growing shrubs. In the winter, their diet shifts to hemlock, lichens and (early on) blueberries. Male mountain goats (Oreamnos americanus) can reach weights of over 300 Ibs, with records over 400 los! Females are about 40% smaller averaging around 180 lbs.
Because of the extremely hostile territory they inhabit, there has been little study on them. However, some incredible scientists have braved the terrain. And found that despite the rugged terrain and steep cliffs they inhabit, fall deaths are not the primary source of mortality in this species. Avalanches, in fact, take that distinction. Other threats include human harvest of females, timber harvest, heavy snowfall, and industrial disturbance. Helicopter tourism is actually of significant concern and management agencies are looking into the effects of these activities.
