Orcinus orca - Hand Embellished Limited Edition - 5.5"x17"
Limited Edition prints are hand embellished by the artist to enhance the texture and depth of these remarkable pieces. Embroidery is added to selected locations where it will best highlight the details within the piece. These prints are limited to only 50 total. As these are made-to-order, please allow 1-2 weeks to ship.
Orca (Orcinus orca) are found worldwide in all oceans and most seas. A staggering 50-75% of their population is in the Southern Ocean, but high densities are also located in the northern Atlantic near Norway, along the Aleutian Islands of Alaska, and in the Gulf of Alaska. While considered a single species, DNA and behavioral analysis suggests a taxonomical review is needed to split the species into several subspecies or even multiple species. These incredible creatures are especially notable for their intricate and highly developed social structures rivaling those of even elephants and higher level primates. This puts into question the moral implications of keeping orca in captivity. While overall numbers of orca remain high, due to confusion in taxonomy of the species group it is possible that several unrecognized species may be actually listed as endangered. This piece is stitched onto wild-caught Alaska salmon leather that I hand-tanned dyed with indigo.
