It’s spring. Brown grass and dead leaves are showing through patches of melted snow and tiny buds are forming on the trees around my house. I’m huddled under a blanket with a mug of tea on the porch - utterly determined to be outside now that the temperatures are finally above freezing. Suddenly I hear it. They’re back. Overhead sandhill cranes are soaring in from their winter refuge. There is no sound that I associate more with summer than the call of the sandhill crane.
These incredible birds travel all the way from the southern United States to our northern meadows and wetlands where their beautiful dances commence. They stretch their wings, bow gracefully to their lifelong mate, pump their heads, and leap athletically and energetically into the air. During this season I make weekly, if not daily, trips to Creamer’s Field to observe their incredible dance. We are so fortunate to have so many who have understood the need to preserve this beautiful space for them. What would summer be without the dance of the sandhills?
This piece was created on sustainably harvested birch bark using a variety of classic and modern embroidery techniques.
