Grizzly bears are a member the of brown bear species which are found in North America, Europe, and Asia. Traditionally, grizzlies (U. arctos horribilis) were distributed throughout western United States, central Mexico, western Canada, and Alaska. In the 1800s, populations were estimated at about 50,000 grizzly bears throughout the US but by the 1930s their numbers were reduced to approximately 2% of their former range. By 1975, populations in the contiguous 48 states were reduced to between 700 and 800.
Targeted recovery in the contiguous US began in 1993 with 6 major recovery areas where efforts would be focused:
Greater Yellowstone (northwest Wyoming, eastern Idaho, southwest Montana
Northern Continental Divide (North-central Montana)
North Cascades (north-central Washington)
Selkirk (northern Idaho, northeast Washington, southeast BC)
Cabinet-Yaak (northwestern Montana, northern Idaho)
Bitterroot (central Idaho, western Montana)
Estimates now put populations in the contiguous 48 states at approximately 1,900 individuals. However, Alaska grizzly populations are estimated at about 30,000!
